Palmer living his dream

Fort Lauderdale, Florida:

Having already seen one of his dreams, a move to professional USA Major League Soccer outfit Houston Dynamo, come true, Lovel Palmer is now fully focused on achieving another and that is cementing his place in the Jamaica Reggae Boyz squad.

Despite representing the national team at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels, Palmer has found it tougher to secure regular playing time in the national outfit at the senior level.

However, after an impressive season so far with the Dynamo's, where he has among other things scored a 35-yard scorcher, the player has been recalled to the squad and is once again looking to prove his worth.

"The move was a dream come true, every player wants the chance to play abroad and I am glad for the opportunity," Palmer said.

"I am also back in the national team and I'm looking to grab that opportunity with both hands and secure a permanent place," Palmer added.

The former Harbour View FC captain has enjoyed some measure of success in the national colours before, having been a part of the Bora Milutinovic-led squad that captured the Lunar Cup in 2007. Palmer also put in an honest shift in midfield against a then Diego Maradona-coached Argentina who came from behind to beat Jamaica 2-1 in February.

With the Reggae Boyz having targeted rebuilding as key in their bid for an appearance to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Palmer believes the current team has just about the right mix.

"The current team is great mixture of youth and experience. In fact some players are young and experienced as well, players like (Luton) Shelton, Shavar Thomas have been playing for the senior team for a long time. There is a lot of good camaraderie in the squad.

Palmer is now also enjoying the adoration of the much larger fanbase of the Texas-based club, which he explains is quite a different experience to playing in Kingston.

The Robertson Stadium in Houston, Texas, has a capacity of 32,000.

"The fans are great and it is awesome, we have a huge fanbase and they really stir you on when you are on the pitch," Palmer said.
