Jam-packed kick-off party for Red Stripe

Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter

These two had all eyes on them when they danced in the middle of the dance floor.

Nobody could anticipate the immense level of traffic leading to the roof of the NHT Parking Lot for the Red Stripe Las Vegas Kick-Off Party on Friday night.

Before even turning on to the road of the venue, there were lines of cars with many people trying to force their way in. There were many persons who even parked their cars some distance from the venue and simply walked.

Unpleasant issue

The stairways and elevators were jam-packed, but all very minor when compared to the number of people inside the party. There was very little walking space and the ability to move was further complicated by persons who danced freely with no regard for others.

An unpleasant issue in the party was the way in which water or liquor seemed to flow on some areas of the floor, creating an obstacle course for some patrons.

At least, the Las Vegas theme was followed to some extent. There was an area neatly designed with red and white cloth called 'Pure Caesars Palace Las Vegas' that housed a pool table. In addition, there were women wearing masks and feathered hats, as well as another set clad in costumes.

Many of those things went unnoticed by the mixed crowd that was busy dancing to the mixes from the likes of Renaissance Disco and ZJ Liquid.

ZJ Liquid created a stir among the women with 'wining' songs that encouraged dance moves like 'hot wuk', 'dutty wine' and 'hula-hoop'.

Renaissance interrupted the vibe with their set, which started with hip-hop. Eventually, the selectors worked their way back into the party with Erup's Click Mi Finger.

The entire crowd seemed to form a chorale, singing Vybz Kartel and Jah Vinci's Weh Dem A Guh and Mavado's Chiney K.

Then, as the vibe was building police went to the selectors asking them to turn the music down, which could barely be heard from the ground floor.

Renaissance continued its set, after which ZJ Liquid returned playing songs to make the crowd do popular dance moves like 'sweep', 'nuh linga' and 'gully creepa'.
